Netherlandic.com is an independent, plain-English reference for people learning Dutch or simply curious about it. No app to install, no account to create — just clear pages that answer real questions about the language.
Why “Netherlandic”?
Netherlandic is the term linguists have long used in English for the Dutch language as a whole — the one standard language shared by the Netherlands and Flanders, rather than either country's variety alone. That is exactly the scope of this site, so the name fit.
Editorial principles
A few rules govern everything published here:
- Accuracy over volume. Fewer pages, checked properly, beat a thousand thin ones. If a topic is not covered yet, that is deliberate.
- The standard language first. Pages describe Standaardnederlands as defined by the Taalunie norms — the Dutch taught in courses and tested in exams.
- Both sides of the border. Where Netherlands and Belgian usage genuinely differ, the difference is flagged rather than ignored or exaggerated.
- Plain English. Linguistic terminology appears only where it earns its place, and always with a translation into normal words.
What the site covers
The core of the site is a set of hubs, each leading to detailed sub-pages: a learning roadmap for planning your route to fluency, grammar explained without jargon, vocabulary organised by usefulness, phrases for real situations, and a pronunciation guide that tackles the sounds English speakers find hardest. Around those sit reference articles on the language itself — its history, where it is spoken, and how it compares with German, Flemish and Afrikaans.
